Submit report on action taken to protect NE people: Centre

The Centre on Monday asked several states, including Karnataka and Delhi, to submit a report on action taken on the recommendations of  the Bezbaruah Committee to protect people of north-eastern origin against discrimination.

States like Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh should also submit the report by November 10, based on which the Centre would prepare a comprehensive affidavit to be submitted in Delhi High Court to explain the action taken to protect people of north-eastern origin.  The decision to seek report from states came after a review meeting called by Home Secretary Anil Goswami here on Monday.

The Centre constituted the M P Bezbaruah Committee to suggest remedial measures for concerns expressed by north-east people, following the murder of Arunachal Pradesh youth Nido Tania in Delhi in February 2014.

In its report to the Home Ministry, the Committee recommended promulgation of a new law as directed by the Delhi High Court or amending the Indian Penal Code to deal with cases of discrimination against people of north-eastern origin seriously.
