Ayurvedic cosmetics are all the rage now

The eyes lined with kohl and lips defined by a delicious lip colour enhances a woman’s beauty making her appear striking. Even in the absence of any other cosmetic, these two are sufficient to last the whole day as multi-tasking women shuttle between home and office, taking charge of responsibilities at various fronts!

But sometimes women overindulge in applying kohl and lipstick. While vanity is important, one must also keep in mind that the kohl may contain lead which is a harmful ingredient. Doctors have often said that eye make up is responsible for most of the cases of allergic reactions and can also cause dryness of the delicate skin around eyes due to the presence of chemicals.

This ofcourse has seen the growing presence of herbal kohl manufacturers in the market. Herbal kohls are made of natural ingredients such as “organic ghee, vegetable carbon black, natural mineral colours and pure oils of rose and sweet almond,” says Vishal Bhandari, founder of SoulTree which has a whole range of ayurvedic colour kohl and lipwear.

Bhandari mentions that “organic ghee is used for a soothing softness, camphor for natural cooling and cleansing, organic almond oil for the wellbeing of the eyes and natural pigments for enhancing the beauty.”

Alternatively, the kajal created by Shahnaz Hussain has trifala, castor oil and almond oil. “Castor and almond oil help to nourish the skin. In fact, castor oil is said to encourage growth of eyelashes too. Trifala is said to be good for the eyesight and also tones the skin around the eyes,” informs Hussain.

Beyond the eye care, it is significant to note that perfumes in certain lipsticks can cause photosensitivity in some people. Research also proves that 2-3 kilos of lipstick is consumed by an average woman and lips being very sensitive and highly absorptive can ingest any chemical that comes in contact with them. Lipsticks manufactured by many brands contain phthalates, lead, carmine (another name for crushed beetles) which can be harmful in the longer run.

On the contrary, herbal ingredients are safer. “Liquorice, jojoba oil and castor oil act as a moisturiser and improve the skin texture and beauty of the lips by keeping them soft and smooth. Sandalwood protects the delicate skin,” says Hussain informing about the ingredients in the lipsticks created by her.

Since the human body responds well to natural ingredients and has an in-built resistance to chemical ones, it is important to make sure which cosmetics are body-friendly before you make the purchase. Bhandari states that “A genuine ayurvedic product will come at a premium.” But the price should not be a deterrent since having a healthy skin is more important. Plus, availability of kohls and lipsticks (in every possible shade) with herbal ingredients is nothing short of a reason
