'Workouts should not reach break point'

Trainers at most gymnasiums and fitness centres across the City lack professional training, posing a risk to those undergoing training there. Doctors warn that this could be dangerous as improper way of exercising could even lead to death.

It was 8.30 am. Doctors at one of the private hospitals in the City were yet to even begin their routine examination of patients. A specialist from their own hospital was rushed in and was declared brought dead.

Dr Kumar (name changed), 35, had fainted during the training session and died of cardiac arrest at the gym. It was later found that the reason for the heart attack was extreme physical exertion.

Time and again, incidents of clients suffering severe injuries, long-term pains and heart attacks have been reported soon after training at gyms. However, little has been done to address the issue. Even acclaimed gym and fitness centres have trainers who are self-taught, with little knowledge about the extent to which one can
exercise.

Harish Krishnappa, co-founder, Karnataka Fitness Academy, said, “It is important to understand that passion to exercise and teach others is not all that it takes to become trainers. It is important to understand the needs of individual clients and then go ahead with training.”

He said that extensive training was a must. “Aspects such as human anatomy, exercise physiology, cardio-respiratory fitness, cardiopulmonary resuscitation must be known by those training individuals. More importantly, one has to understand that the needs of individuals are different based on their health,” Krishnappa said.

Dr Ajith Benedict Royan, vice president, Hosmat Hospital, said: “If one lifts weight beyond his capacity or in the wrong way, it will lead to back pain, pain in knee joints, anterior ligament tear and also fractures. Besides, lifting too much weight over a long period will lead to wear and tear of knee joints,” he said.
