PC remarks upset Cong

The Congress has strongly disapproved of its leader P Chidambaram’s insinuation that former prime minister Manmohan Singh had erred by not taking immediate action when the 2G scam came to light.

The former finance minister had on Friday said that the UPA government should have cancelled 2G licenses even before the Supreme Court told it to do so, which several Congress leaders anonymously criticised.

They questioned the rationale behind Chidambaram’s statements as he was part of the UPA high command that took all major decisions. “His remarks are in bad taste,” a senior Congress leader said. A fairly large section of AICC functionaries were critical of the former finance minister. “He enjoyed the fruits of power for all these years and is now putting the party in an embarrassing situation,” a party leader said. The BJP said Chidambaram’s comment was proof that the Congress had tried to hide its errors.
