Modi to stress on black money at G-20 summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that he would stress on international cooperation against black money in his interventions at the G-20 summit in Australia.

“A key issue for me (at the G-20 summit) would be to highlight the importance of international cooperation against black money,” Modi said, a day before he is scheduled to leave New Delhi for a nine-day-long tour to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji, where he is likely to meet over 40 leaders from Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Pacific Region – both in multilateral format as well as on the sideline of the conclaves.

In his longest foreign tour after taking over as Prime Minister on May 26, Modi will attend India-Asean and East Asian summits in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday and Thursday and the G-20 summit at Brisbane in Australia from Friday to Sunday.

“These meetings are taking place at a time of multiple global challenges. I look forward to seeking a global environment that supports our aspirations for economic development and a peaceful world,” Modi said in a statement issued on Monday.
Deccan Herald last month reported that Modi would use his interventions at the G-20 summit to call for expediting efforts to move towards Automatic Exchange of Information, a mechanism, which the bloc endorsed last year as a key to international cooperation on fighting tax evasion.

“The G-20 Summit, which brings together countries that account for 85% of the world’s economic output, is a key forum for countries to coordinate their activities and pursue collective action to support global economic growth and stability, stable financial markets and global trading regimes and employment generation,” Modi said on Monday. He added that he intended to discuss with other leaders in Brisbane how the G-20 nations could accelerate the creation of next generation infrastructure, including digital infrastructure, and ensure access to clean and affordable energy. He also said that the Asean was at the core of his government’s Act East policy. He said that he was looking forward to discussing with Asean leaders at the India-Asean summit at Nay Pyi Taw how to take New Delhi’s relationship with the 10-nation bloc to a new level.

Modi is also scheduled to visit Canberra and two other cities in Australia after attending the G-20 summit in Brisbane.
