IPS officer in the dock for writing against Giriraj

The Bihar Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to senior IPS officer Amitabh Kumar Das asking him to explain in what capacity he had written a letter to the prime minister through IG (Special Branch) alleging that the newly-inducted Union minister Giriraj Singh had links with the banned militant outfit Ranveer Sena.

Das, the 1994-batch IPS officer, is currently posted with the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC).A day earlier, he had written a letter to the prime minister, requesting him to ask the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to probe Giriraj’s links with the outlawed outfit Ranveer Sena. The organisation, now defunct after the death of its chief Brahmeshwar Mukhiya, was a pocket organisation of militant upper caste Bhumihars and had been reportedly involved in several massacres in Bihar in the last three decades.

Das, who, as SP of Arwal in mid-90s, had recommended that the Ranveer Sena be banned, has been a controversial officer and this is precisely why even after 20 years of service, he has not been promoted even once and is today serving as SP. Taking umbrage at the Das’ letter to J S Gangwar, IG, Special Branch (intelligence wing of the state police), the BHRC has asked him to explain under what capacity he had written a letter to the prime minister through the IG. The commission has asked him to reply to the notice within a week.

Meanwhile, the letter has given fresh ammunition to the ruling party here. “We have always maintained that tainted people are being inducted by the PM,” said Shyam Razak, a minister in JD(U) regime.
