BJP to go all out against 'tainted' ministers

Last Updated 13 November 2014, 20:17 IST

The State BJP has decided to up the ante against four ministers in the Siddaramaiah cabinet, who have been embroiled in controversies, by launching a series of agitations in the coming weeks.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the State office bearers, presided over by State BJP president Pralhad Joshi, here on Thursday. The meeting was attended by P Muralidhar Rao, the newly appointed BJP national general secretary in charge of party affairs in Karnataka.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Joshi demanded that the ministers - Cooperation Minister H S Mahadeva Prasad,  Municipal Administration Minister Qamarul Islam and Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Dinesh Gundu Rao - should be dropped from the Cabinet for being involved in land-related controversies. Home Minister K J George too needs to be sacked for not being able to handle his portfolio effectively, he said.

Joshi said if the ministers fail to resign by November 19, the party MPs, legislators and office bearers will sit on a dharna in front of the Gandhi statue at Anand Rao Circle in Bengaluru the next day.

“We will then walk to Raj Bhavan and submit a memorandum to the Governor, along with documents on the involvement of the ministers in the scams,” Joshi said. Joshi said that if the ministers continue in office, members of the youth wing of the party will hold black flag protests in front of the venue of every public function the ministers attend.

Noting that the State government had turned a blind eye to the plight of farmers, Joshi said the party will mobilise support of 50,000 farmers to picket Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi on December 9, the opening day of the winter session of the legislature there.

The BJP launched its membership drive in the State by organising a workshop for party workers on Thursday.

Rao said that the party was aiming to enrol 75 lakh members in the State in the coming months. The party had enrolled 43 lakh members during its previous enrolment drive in 2009. The five-month drive will conclude on March 31 next year. He said that the State unit of the party will take the government head-on.

“We will expose the shortcomings of the State government. That will be our chief activity both inside and outside the Assembly. We will give the government sleepless nights,” Rao said.
