Emphasising the need to give importance to uniform education system, Poet Dr Siddalingaiah has demanded the State government to appeal against the Supreme Court’s judgement which said that the choice of the language in primary education is left to parents.

Delivering his presidential address at Alva’s Nudisiri- 2014, here on Friday, he said that the decision will increase the gap between poor and rich. Prominence should be given to Kannada in legislature, executive and judiciary. Though there is an order that judgement should be given in Kannada in district and lower courts, the direction is not being followed.

To teach Kannada as optional subject in colleges, there should not be any restriction. Kannada schools should not be closed though there are less number of students, but the government should provide basic facilities like own building, furniture, teachers etc, he said. Meanwhile, he said along with Kannada, opportunity should be given to other languages as well to grow. English should be taught in Kannada medium schools effectively.

About girl child
Dr Siddalingaiah opined that those who abuse girl children should be expelled from society. Atrocity against women is shame for society and female foeticide is inhuman. In the cases of rape, the cuprites should be punished and they should be expelled from society. Meanwhile, he clarified that he is not against religious beliefs which give moral strength to human beings, but various types of superstitions which are still being followed should be stopped and the government should implement Anti Superstitions Bill, he said.

Costly healthcare
“Just like education, now healthcare is also becoming too costly for poor. They fear to enter high-tech hospitals in cities as they can’t bear their treatment bills. The government has no control over such hospitals. If ‘Yama’ takes your life away, these hospitals take both life and money. Earlier, people used to take loans for marriages or other functions, but now they want money for healthcare.         Dr Siddalingaiah said that farmers are not getting justifiable price for their agricultural products. Youth are not showing interest in farming and moving towards cities. If the tradition continues, the land in villages would become barren and people have to suffer for food.

On slavery system
He said in Karnataka there around four to five lakh slaves. According to a survey conducted by Jeeta Vimuktha Karnataka, in 28 districts of the state, more than 10,000 slaves have been identified. Though the State government had charted out a special work plan in 2007, it was not implemented in base level. Now, Shivajiganeshan committee has submitted a report to the government and it should do some follow-up, he said.

Inauguration
Earlier, Litterateur Dr Na D’Souza poured milk to paddy sticks to mark the inauguration of 11th edition of the ‘Alva’s Nudisiri’, the three-day literary fest at Rathnakaravarni stage, Dr U R Ananthamurthy hall of Sundari Ananda Alva premises of Vidyagiri here on Friday. The fest will be held on the topic ‘Varthamanada Tallanagalu’ (turbulences of present) till November 16.

In the inaugural speech, he said that the present which doesn’t has cultural background and any idea about future is the real turbulence. The present is a period change and one can find it in family life, society and political scenario. Along with some positive changes like new inventions, there are several other factors like globalisation, increasing craze about money and asset. Youth are depended on machines. More than nation, everyone thinks about their personal benefits, he said.

Stating that farmers have become labourers in their own field, he said that governments are making people roam from pillar to post for various cards. Police and politicians both have failed to keep the faith of people. “Writers have forgotten their responsibility and getting attracted towards various awards,” he rued.
