A 45-year-old man was shot dead and his nephew injured when they were attacked by four men on two motorcycles in north-east Delhi’s Shahdara on Friday.

On being chased, the accused also fired at the staff of a police control room van. They managed to escape, police said on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Shakir Ali who hailed from UP’s Baghpat district. Police said he came to the capital with his nephew Kamil, 30, and friend Anis, 35, on Friday.

They were visiting the house of Shakir’s brother-in-law in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar.
“The incident took place when the three men were returning from Krishna Nagar to Baghpat in a car,” said a police officer.

They had reached near Shyam Lal College in Shahdara when they were waylaid by motorcycles-borne assailants.

“The accused forced them to stop the car and opened fire without any warning,” the officer added. The attack was noticed by a PCR van, and its staff chased the motorcyclists.

It is also alleged that the four men opened fire on the police team on which the policemen also fired a round.

The attackers, however, managed to escape with the help of traffic in the area which blocked the way of the PCR van.

“Shakir and Kamil sustained gunshot wounds in the attack, while Anis escaped unhurt. They were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where Shakir was declared brought dead,” the officer said.

Kamil’s condition is out of danger. He was hit on the leg.
A case of murder and attempt to murder has been filed with Shahdara police station.
After an initial probe, police suspect it to be an attack over personal enmity and they are questioning Shakir’s family members and friends. Shakir’s body was handed over to family after a post-mortem on Saturday.

He was unmarried and lived with his mother and the family of three brothers in Baghpat.
