A total of 17 families living illegally in houses constructed under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, by Karnataka Slum Clearance Board (KSCB) were evicted at Alim Nagar, here on Monday.

In an early morning operation, conducted jointly by Mysore City Corporation, KSCB and the Police, occupants of the houses without any title deeds for the same were forced to vacate the houses. As many as 15 families in Block 19 and two families of Block 14 were evicted in the operation.

Documents

MCC and KSCB officials, accompanied by 150 policemen launched the operation around 5.45 am, and families which failed to furnish valid documents were asked the vacate the houses.

Few families who objected to the move, claimed that they were beneficiaries of the housing scheme, but their names were removed from the list compiled by the Board. They also expressed their dissatisfaction over the issue, stating that they would be homeless, if evicted by the officials. An argument ensued, resulting in few tense moments.

Assistant Executive Engineer of the Board, S Tejashree, was cornered by a few women, who expressed their dissatisfaction over the issue. However, police personnel present at the venue prevented the situation from escalating.

Oral instructions

Nagaraju, Corporator of ward 45, said that oral instructions had been given to illegal occupants three months ago, by officials of the Board, to clear the houses.

“However, the occupants refused to move out, forcing the operation,” he said.

Due to the presence of illegal occupants, the true beneficiaries, who were not provided houses despite being in the beneficiary list, had been repeatedly petitioning the Corporation. To fulfill their demands, these occupants had to be removed, he added.
