Students, teachers and other people got together at Satyaniketan market in south Delhi to hold a candlelight vigil for 21-year-old Delhi University student Bhawna, who was allegedly killed by her parents for marrying outside her caste.

The victim’s mother-in-law, Bharti, also participated in the programme organised by the All India Students’ Association.

“Today, we are seeing that there is an increase in the number of attacks on the freedom of young women and men’s right to choose their own partner,” DU student Charul said.

She said the government has failed in ending honour killings. The programme, which ended with a condolence meeting, was organised near the victim’s college. Students and teachers from Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia turned up to show solidarity.
