Dumping unlimited in HBR Layout, RT Nagar

If roadsides have turned eyesores, the vacant plots in HBR Layout are worse. Residents in the vicinity bear the brunt and face health issues as well. This is the picture across the layout, a reality that finds its echo in many other parts of city.

A huge vacant plot has become a very apparent dumpyard on 1st Main Road , HBR Layout, 5th Block. This place has become such a big health hazard for the area that over the four to five months, some residents have fallen victims to Dengue and Malaria.

“The dumpyard is close to a dirty Storm Water Drain (SWD). During the rainy season, the foul smell and mosquito menace increases. Petty shop owners and residents staying in unauthorised sheds closeby throw waste, especially during night times. Sometimes even poultry waste is dumped inside the drain as well at the vacant spot,” says HBR

Residents’ Welfare Association president, Hidayath Ulla Khan.

Khan says he had brought the issue to the notice of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials, but the problem remains unsolved. Similarly, at Yelahanka New Town locality, more than 30 per cent of the vacant plots are now filled with muck.

In some areas, residents have got so fed up of the garbage strewn all around that they have themselves taken the task of cleaning the waste. “In Yelahanka New Town Sector A, there are more than 50 empty sites and all of them are in a
dilapidated state. Along with trash, there is unchecked growth of shrubs and weeds in the plots. About a month back, we residents cleaned a site as a part of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’,” recalls Ravi Gangadhar, Secretary of the KHB High Rise Apartment Owners Welfare Association.

Residents complain that no fumigation or spraying are undertaken at the vacant plots despite increased mosquito breeding. Similarly at other areas such as Tannery Road, Hebbal, Kanakanagar, RT Nagar, Jayanagar, Sanjaynagar and other residential layouts too, many vacant sites have turned into mini landfills.
