Six months after quitting the DMK “with a heavy heart”, actor Khushboo on Wednesday joined the Congress party.

The actor-politician met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence in the presence of AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik and Tamil Nadu unit chief E V K S Elangovan.

Congress leaders feel that having the popular actor as a member could prove to be a morale booster for party whose fortunes are sagging in the state after G K Vasan deserted it earlier this month.

“Congress is the only party that can keep India united, that is why I am here,” she told reporters at the AICC headquarters here.

Khushboo had joined the DMK in May 2010 when the party was in power in Tamil Nadu.
However, she quit the party in June this year sulking for being “sidelined”. “I had quit the DMK with a heavy heart,” she had said then.

After quitting the DMK, Khushboo was also learnt to have met some BJP leaders.
Asked why she chose the Congress over the BJP, the actor said Congress was the only party pursuing the idea of secularism which can keep the country united.

Kushboo was the target of DMK ire last year when she made certain comments about leadership succession in the party.Earlier, she also was a member of the AIADMK.
Khushboo has acted in over 200 films and hosted television shows in Tamil
channels.
