JOIN USPolice arrested five people, including a couple, for blackmail and extortion after laying a honey trap for them.
The suspects—Anees Ahmed and his wife Sumaiya, their associates Sadiq Pasha, Ijaz and Shafi—are said to be residents of DJ Halli and the nearby areas.
They were arrested by the High Grounds police on Wednesday, based on a complaint by a doctor from a well-known hospital in the City.
The police recovered Rs 25 lakh worth of valuables, including a car, an auto-rickshaw, laptops, mobile phones and Rs 15.5 lakh in cash.
On November 21, the doctor approached the High Grounds police station and lodged a complaint against the five. He claimed that the suspects had taken his pictures and filmed him with a woman with whom he was locked up in a room.
The doctor alleged that the suspects had invited him home for lunch and forced him to stay with the woman who then “forced” herself on him, the police said.
They demanded money, and if he refused to pay up, threatened to leak the said video and the photographs to the media. The doctor paid them Rs 20 lakh in all but when they demanded more, he made a complaint to the police. The police tracked down the suspects’ mobile phones and succeeded in arresting them.
A senior police officer said “The incident occurred on November 15. The suspects invited the doctor to the house of one of them for lunch, and locked him up with a woman, who acted in an obscene manner while the others filmed the whole act.
Later, they demanded Rs 15 lakh. If he refused to pay up, they threatened to leak the video and the pictures to the media. The doctor paid up and took back the video and the pictures. But the suspects demanded more and he paid Rs five lakh more. But the suspects didn’t stop at that and demanded more money, after which the doctor approached us.”
The officer said that Anees was a habitual offender and an associate of history-sheeter Tanveer Ahmed.
