The Directorate of Education has lined up a slew of measures to improve the functioning of institutions and make Delhi a learning hub when 224 government schools do not even have adequate toilets on their premises.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) has planned to construct pucca school buildings at 19 government institutions. “The Delhi government has earmarked Rs 345 crore and we have got Rs 16 crore for this project,” said Anindo Majumdar Principal Secretary, Delhi Education Department.

The department is in the process to make 500 new classrooms in crowded institutions to ease off congestion, he added. “The total cost will be Rs 59 crore and Rs 30 crore has been sanctioned for repair of school buildings,” said Majumdar.

Asked about inadequate toilet facilities in schools, Majumdar said, “For the construction of toilets blocks in 224 schools, Rs 16 crore has been issued by the government.”

“NGOs and private schools have been involved to expedite the process of construction of toilet blocks. State Bank of Patiala has constructed a toilet block in east Delhi,” he added.

To impart skill enhancement training to students, the Delhi education department has decided to develop Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). An east campus of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, which will focus on Architecture and Planning, will be constructed in Surajmal Vihar.

“Through ITIs students get industrial experience and get a job. Skill upgradation is the need of the hour,” said Majumdar.

To improve the level of cleanliness the department has devised a 28 point guidelines on which reports are given by the inspecting team. “On the basis of grading, the schools will then be graded into three categories – Green, Yellow and Red indicating good, satisfactory and poor,” said the DoE. “Things are not ideal but we are moving in the right direction,” said Directorate of Education Director Padmini Singla.

The DoE said that inspections have been carried out on a regular basis. “Over 700 inspections have been conducted since April,” the department said. The DoE runs 1007 government schools catering to 16 lakh students in the city.
