On a tip-off that the Nepali, Nambaraj Bahadur Thapa (28) was roaming in the Layout, Rafeeq and his staff had rushed to the spot in two jeeps. It was about 11.45 pm.
But, once the police reached there, the suspect started running. In the chase that followed, the police first fired in the air. This provoked the Nepali to turn back and launch a surprise attack on the inspector, stabbing him on the stomach. Even as Rafeeq started bleeding, Sub-Inspector, Manjunath fired at the accused from behind. Thapa sustained bullet wounds on his knee and was soon overpowered, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-West), Panduranga H Rane.

A profusely bleeding Rafeeq and Thapa were rushed to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, where their condition is said to be stable. Doctors said Rafeeq sustained stab wounds that were a centimetre deep.

Thapa was a suspect in the murder of George in Vijayanagar, last month. He was a habitual offender and was allegedly involved in several cases of burglaries in Mahalakshmipuram and Vijayanagar, the police said.
