Last Updated 28 November 2014, 18:50 IST

Zilla Panchayat has passed an unanimous resolution against the proposed Kasturirangan report to safeguard Eco-Sensitive Areas (ESA) of Western Ghat and nearby areas, in the general body meeting at Nazeer Saab hall of Chikkamagaluru Zilla Panchayat on Friday.

In the meeting chaired by Zilla Panchayat President K T Bhagya Ranganath, all members of the zilla panchayat forgetting party barriers opposed the report submitted by Dr Kasturirangan to the Central government. Raising the issue, ZP former president Shivashankar expressed concern that in some areas of Malnad, officials are taking signature from gram panchayat presidents so that they have agreed to the implementation of the recommendations, he alleged.

Meetings are being convened without bringing to the notice of the zilla panchayat. Many members of the ZP don’t have information about the meeting which has been called by the ZP to discuss on Kasturirangan report. Work should be done to collect public opinion about the proposal in the rural areas, which is not being done, he said.

Former ZP vice president Ranganath said that the officials have started convening meetings at gram panchayat, taluk panchayat and zilla panchayat in hurry as the courts have started questioning about the public opinion. These meetings are being called just to submit some data to the court. How can they collect opinion from public, when Officials have not even informed ZP members, he questioned. Officals have completely failed to understand the life of farmers, he rued.

In the report, it has been said that prominence has been given to organic farming in the district. But, the forest department officials don’t let farmers enter forest. If the government implements the recommendations, farmers can’t even cut the branches of trees. It would make the life of Malnad people a hazardous, Sucheta Narendra said.

Savita said that people of Kalasa are already fighting against Inam land and enchroachment  problems. Implementation of the new proposals would prove unbearable for them.

As most of the members opposed the Kasturirangan report, the Zilla Panchayat passed a resolution unanimously against it.  ZP Vice president Shashirekha, CEO Priyanka Mary were present among others.
