Rampal's arrest cost  Rs 27 crore, HC told

A whopping Rs 27 crore was spent in the operation to arrest self-styled godman Rampal from the hideout in his ashram in Hisar district of Haryana.

This information was submitted before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh on Friday. Rampal’s arrest involved a two-week stand-off between his armed supporters and the police outside his sprawling 12-acre ashram.

The amount involves the money spent by states of Punjab, Haryana, the Union territory of Chandigarh and the Centre. Haryana DGP S N Vashisht submitted a detailed report of the operation carried out at Satlok Ashram in Hisar that finally led to the arrest of the 63-year-old Rampal.

The operation witnessed large-scale violence. Six lives, including that of a one-and-half-year-old child, were lost in the operation. Over 200 had sustained injuries.
The court was informed that Haryana spent Rs 15.43 crore on locating and arresting Rampal, Punjab Rs 4.34 crore, Chandigarh administration Rs 3.29 crore and the Centre Rs 3.55 crore.

The total amount incurred was Rs 26.61 crore. A division bench of Justices M Jeyapaul and Darshan Singh adjourned the case for resumed hearing on December 23. Rampal, along with co-accused Ram Pal Dhaka and O P Hooda, were produced before the court on Friday.
