Regn for health insurance launched

The Centre, in association with the State government has introduced free health insurance coverage for the poor and labourers of the unorganised sector, with the objective of providing quality treatment, at state of the art hospitals.

BPL card holders, labourers who have worked for a minimum 15 days under MGNREGA scheme in the last fiscal, beedi workers, construction workers, in the district, are eligible under the scheme. The facility has also been extended to licensed vendors, porters, hawkers, roadside vendors, auto drivers, safai karmacharis and others.

A biometric smart card with fingerprint and photographs will be distributed to the beneficiaries. A family of five will be eligible to get free treatment worth Rs 30,000 per year. The smart card will be accepted by registered hospitals across the State. A registration fee of Rs 30 will be collected and no extra amount has to be paid.

The Centre and State governments will bear the premium amount. Treatment will be provided for more than 1,085 types of ailments, including surgeries. The hospital will provide Rs 1,000 per year as travel expenditure for in-patients.

Chamarajanagar district has a target of registering 1,62,250 beneficiaries for the current year, including four taluks and 120 gram panchayats. The target for the following taluks are: Chamarajanagar - 68,061; Gundlupet - 31,467; Yalandur - 22,354; and Kollegal - 40,368.

Registration process has started through gram panchayats beginning from Chamarajanagar taluk. A three month time frame has been set for completing the registration. District Labour Officer Hemalatha appealed to the beneficiaries to make use of the opportunity and get their names registered at their respective gram panchayat office and anganwadi centres.
