Choppers to monitor Jharkhand

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the second phase of polling for 20 constituencies in Jharkhand scheduled for Tuesday.

Election to 13 seats has already taken place in the first phase of poll on November 25. As 18 of the 20 constituencies going to polls on Tuesday are Maoist-infested, voting will take place from 7 am to 3 pm, while in the rest two seats — Jamshedpur East and Jamshedpur West — the polling will continue till 5 pm.

“We have deployed 45,000 security personnel at different booths. Besides, six choppers will be pressed into service to keep a tab on miscreants, including Maoists, through air monitoring,” said Jharkhand Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar on Monday.

Altogether 223 candidates, including two former chief ministers — Arjun Munda and Madhu Koda — are in the fray for the poll. While Munda is contesting from Kharsawan, Madhu is testing the electoral water from Majhgaon in Singhbhum. His wife Geeta Koda is in the fray from Madhu’s traditional seat of Jagannathpur.
