The 18-year- old Income Tax (I-T) return cases against AIADMK chief J Jayalalitha and her close aide Sasikala is likely to come to an end with both of them paying fines.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had recently treated Jayalalitha and Sasikala’s offences as “compoundable” and decided let them off after collecting the fine amount.

The government has produced a required proof document before the metropolitan court in Chennai, which was trying the duo, about the payment of the Rs 2 crore fine. The former Tamil Nadu chief minister and her aide had filed “compounding applications” seeking an amicable settlement with the I-T department in the four criminal cases against them.

Jayalalitha and Sasikala had not filed their income tax returns in their individual capacities for 1993 to 1994 and as partners in Sasi enterprises for the assessment years between 1991 and 1993. Criminal proceedings were initiated only in 1996 and 1997.
