SP asks govt not to evict leader from bungalow

The Rajya Sabha on Monday saw disruption and adjournment on account of a demand from the Samajwadi Party (SP), which argued that its party member Neeraj Shekhar, son of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar, should be allowed to retain his father’s bungalow.

Just as Chairman Hamid Ansari announced the commencement of the Question Hour, SP members led by Jaya Bachchan stood up and pressed for the government’s response on a plea Shekhar filed to retain the bungalow.

“I need your protection as one of our members, who is a two-term Lok Sabha member and has now come to the Rajya Sabha, has been issued an eviction notice from his official bungalow. I have been a victim of this, I need your protection. He has lived in this house since 1967,” Bachchan said.

The Congress joined in to raise their grievances concerning allotment of houses. Ansari’s repeated assertions that these issues need to be discussed in the internal committee did not quell the uproar. The chairman then adjourned the House.
