Celebrating Shakti and the power within us

ART EXHIBITION
Last Updated 02 December 2014, 15:58 IST

She is Shakti, the power of universe. A personification of wisdom, compassion and protection. She abides in the heart of every being. Where there is love, compassion and mercy, we can feel her presence. Her abode is always the present moment.

And, therefore her existence is defined in different cultural traditions of the country,” says Ritu Gupta, whose paintings are a reflection of her belief.

Her work ‘The Divine Goddess’ has been put on display at Open Palm Court, India Habitat Centre. The series is devoted to the glorification of the Goddess, who is the manifestation of Goddess Parvati and is worshipped in all forms. Gupta celebrates the power of women through her work.

“The earliest reference to Goddess can be found in the Vedas, particularly in the Rigveda, the oldest scared text of the Hinds,” says Gupta. “That cult of Goddess was paralleled by manifold traditions of worship of Grama devata, commonly a female deity which continues today almost unchanged in villages across India.

Gupta’s paintings demonstrate the influence of the traditional art and culture in a style that is very much her own. In this series she does not seem to be making a school or style-centric adaptation.

In all her paintings the focus is on the background, detailing and beautiful birds, making each artwork soft, supple and feminine. With colour combinations of vibrant and light in different strokes and textures, Gupta has tried to evolve a unique style of her own.

The exhibition is on view till December at India Habitat Centre from 11 am to 7 pm.
