HDK demands Rs-3,000 crore package for sugar cane farmers

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a Rs 3,000 crore package for sugar cane farmers in the State, besides allowing up to 10 per cent blending of ethanol in petrol and diesel.

In a letter dated December 1, Kumaraswamy said that sugar cane farmers have pending dues to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore from sugar factories. The farmers are yet to receive money for supplying sugar cane to the factories in 2013. Hence, the Centre should come to the rescue of the farmers by announcing the package, he added.

Sugar mills are reporting loss across the country due to increase in cost of production and decrease in price of sugar.

Allowing up to 10 per cent blending of ethanol in petrol and diesel will create a win-win situation for both farmers and mill owners. Currently, only up to five per cent ethanol can be blended, he added.

Increasing ethanol production has social, economic and environmental advantages.
A separate policy for the compulsory and immediate use of ethanol in fuel should be formulated. There is a need to solve the issue of pricing of ethanol production by the sugar mills immediately, the JD(S) leader stated.

Meanwhile, speaking to mediapersons in Mandya on Tuesday, Kumaraswamy said that the JD(S) will hold a statewide protest on December 05, urging the Government to fix scientific price of sugar cane.
