Mysore airport waits to flutter its wings again

A month has elapsed since the last flight took off from Mysore Airport, at Mandakalli, on October 24, but there is no sign of any other operator evincing interest in launching the services.

On Tuesday, though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah returned to Bengaluru by a special flight from Mysore Airport, he didn’t enquire about the status of the facility, though it went defunct to an extent. After the last flight of SpiceJet, that took off only on a few occasions, the metal birds made a sound, albeit with special and chartered planes.

Three special aircrafts belonging to the Indian Air force and one of an automobile entrepreneur landed in the airport. Prior to the arrival of Chief of Air staff Arup Raha by a special jet plane on November 28, two planes belonging to IAF carrying the defence personnel had landed here, to inspect the facilities ahead of the visit of the Air Chief Marshal.

Earlier too, when regular flights were absent, chartered flights belonging to private companies used to utilise the facility.

When Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met Union Civil Aviation Minister Gajapathi Raju in New Delhi on November 7, hopes flickered among the airport authorities here. As the CM hails from Mysuru, it was thought that reconnecting Mysuru by air was on his mind. But, it later emerged that the chief minister discussed about the widening of Mysuru-Nanjangud road (NH-212 ) passing in front of the airport, besides the proposed tunnel at the same stretch to facilitate the expansion works of airport in the future. Director of Airport C Manjunath told Deccan Herald, no other operator has responded, even as efforts are being made to keep the airport fully operational, by launching correspondence with the operators. SpiceJet operated flights for one year and 10 months, since it renewed hopes on air connectivity by launching the commercial services in January 2013.
