Anil Sinha takes CBI wheel

Senior IPS officer Anil Sinha took charge as CBI director on Wednesday following the retirement of controversial figure Ranjit Sinha.

The 1979 Bihar-cadre officer has the immediate task of expunging the taint on the country’s premier investigating agency, which has drawn the criticism of the Supreme Court, particularly in the past few months.

The IPS officer, who has supervised the Saradha chit fund scam probe, served as CBI special director for 21 months before being appointed director on Tuesday night. After A P Singh and Ranjit Sinha, the 58-year-old officer is the third consecutive CBI chief from Bihar.

With CBI facing all-round criticism, the new director said that these kind of challenges, small or big, presented opportunities to do good.

“I accept the responsibility to head the premier investigation agency with deep humility. I am aware of the challenge facing the CBI and would endeavour to work with my team to strengthen the cause of justice and reiterate our commitment to the values enshrined in the motto of the organisation i.e. industry, impartiality and integrity. I seek cooperation of all in discharge of my responsibilities,” Sinha said.

He had joined CBI in May 2013 as special director and was awarded a police medal in 2000 and the President’s police medal in 2006 for meritorious service.

After joining the IPS in 1979, Sinha served in Bihar for 18 years in various capacities such as superintendent of police in important districts and later as Special Branch DIG. Sinha was deputed in the Special Protection group between 1998 and 2005, serving as DIG and thereafter IG.
