AMU allows girls to use library

Under attack from different quarters for banning entry of the undergraduate girls into the main library citing lack of space and security concerns, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), after a direction from the Allahabad High Court, finally relented.

The varsity has not only lifted the ban on the entry of the girls into the main library but has also decided to provide them transportation facility for going there.

The vice-chancellor has issued a direction in this regard, according to the varsity officials. Transport facility would be made available to the girls on Sundays from the Women’s College. The varsity officials said that the arrangement was to ensure safety of the girls visiting the main library.

Vice-Chancellor Zameeruddin Shah had earlier remarked that the undergraduate girls would not be allowed into the main library as it would increase the number of boys there. “If we allow the girls into Maulana Azad library, the number of boys will increase four times,” Shah had said.

Shah later explaining his remark in the wake of all round criticism, said that there was not enough space at the library. “There is a severe shortage of space in the library...allowing girls will further aggravate the situation,” he said.

Shah’s remark had triggered widespread condemnation. The BJP sharply criticised the ban and HRD minister Smriti Irani sought a report from the varsity. Later on a petition, the Allahabad High Court directed the varsity to lift the ban and allow girls to use the library.
