W Ghats report: State seeks 2 more months to file response

The State government has written to the Centre seeking two more months to file its response to the recommendations of the K Kasturirangan report on the Western Ghats.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had set December 31 deadline for the State government to file its response.

A High-Level Working Group headed by noted scientist K Kasturirangan had identified approximately 37 per cent of the Western Ghats covering about 60,000 sq km across six states as Ecological Sensitive Area.

Karnataka wants the extent of area and the number of villages declared ecologically sensitive spread mainly across Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts reduced.

“We have sought two more months to submit our response. We want an extensive consultation process at the grassroots level before finalising our response,” Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee said.
