National Lok Adalat disposes 1.25cr cases, disburses Rs 3000cr

Over 1.25 crore cases across the country were today disposed of by the second National Lok Adalat which also saw disbursal of Rs 3,000 crore as compensation towards motor accidents claims.

According to National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), the reduction in pendency of cases averaged about nine per cent across all the states.

The Lok Adalat was today inaugurated by Supreme Court judge Justice A R Dave and in the apex court itself 28 out of 53 cases were settled by three benches.

Justice Dave said it is the best and cheap mode to resolve disputes as both the fighting parties come to a mutually acceptable solution and they do not have to wait for years to get their cases decided in court.

"This method is the best way to resolve the dispute. It is fast and less expensive. Relations between the litigants do not get strained and they remain cordial as they mutually agree to resolve the dispute," he said, adding, "People need to have a big heart and keep their ego under control to get the dispute resolved in Lok Adalat".

NALSA officials said that further micro-details, including nature of the cases disposed of through the Lok Adalats would become clear after comprehensive analysis and is likely to be made available tomorrow.

The cases which were taken up ranged from family disputes, matrimonial cases, motor accident claims, bank recoveries, petty criminal matters, revenue matters, disbursements under MNREGA and other welfare schemes.

NALSA in its statement said the Lok Adalat "has greatly benefited the common man and it has been achieved not only because of the Legal Services Authorities but also because of the cooperation of the state governments and local administration as well as the financial institutions which include Banks and Insurance Companies."

Last year, the first of its kind National Lok Adalat saw the disposal of 71.50 lakh cases.
