Tannery road in throes of woes

Unfinished works on this stretch pose a threat to users

This is the condition of Tannery Road. This largely neglected stretch from Tannery Road, also known as Baba Saheb Ambedkar Road up to Nagavara is a connecting road to Bengaluru International Airport.

Incomplete projects

Unfinished projects pose a threat to residents and commuters on this stretch, which is densely populated and is lined up with thousands of shops. About 40 feet wide, the road has a narrow footpath which has become BBMP’s dumping yard, posing health hazards and causing traffic jams in the area. With most schools located at Frazer Town, students residing in the vicinity of Periyar Nagar have to pass by the garbage to reach their school.

Despite repeated complaints the garbage remains uncleared.

A tilted cement slab which was supposed to be a lid for BSNL cables has led to many accidents. The BWSSBtook up some repair work near a valve  six months ago in Venkateshpura and the work is still incomplete. At least four people  sustain injuries because of this incomplete  work.

Salauddin, Hardware shop owner said, “The BWSSB dug a pit to undertake some repair work six months ago, but it has not completed the work  posing a threat to motorists. Despite repeated complaints no action has been taken to complete the work.”

What could be more dangerous than an incomplete drainage near a railway level crossing? The BBMP seems to have not learnt lessons from a couple of incidents of children being washed away in storm water drain last year.  The Palike  appears to be in no hurry to complete the important works on Nagvara Main Road.

Nizam, a resident of KG Halli said, “BBMP dug up the entire place for underground drainage works but has not  completed them. This has lead  to many health problems in the area. Even the buses find it difficult to ply on this stretch and residents have tried to repair the road themselves.”
