Promising to marry them, man dupes 17 women

Victims from Bengaluru, Hosur, Mysuru, Tirupati lose money

A 35-year-old man, who cheated several women of their money after promising to marry them, has been arrested by the Kamakshipalya police.

The suspect Johnny Rex, a native of Tamil Nadu, was settled in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh.
On Friday night, the police laid a trap and arrested him in the City. It was found that he had cheated around 17 women from Bengaluru, Hosur, Mysuru, Hyderbad, Tirupati and many other places, claiming to be a businessman.

Matrimonial website

Rex was arrested following a complaint filed by a victim, a resident of Kamakshipalya. She told the police she had uploaded her profile on a matrimonial website. Recently,
a person named Harivasu contacted her and told her he was interested in marrying her.
He visited the victim and confirmed the marriage, stating he would marry her after divorcing his wife. He got engaged to her and left for his hometown, the police said.
He was in constant touch.

After a few days, he told the victim that he was in need of money due to personal problems and took Rs six lakh from her. Again, he demanded Rs 2 lakh, but the victim refused to pay him. He started threatening her that he would call off the marriage if the cash was not paid and kill her entire family, the police said.

Something fishy

Sensing something fishy, the victim approached the Kamakshipalya police and lodged a complaint. The police tracked the person through his profile on the matrimonial websites. They laid a trap and lured him to the City and arrested him.

During interrogation, it was revealed that he had numerous profiles on matrimonial websites with various names like Johnny Rex, Maharaj Dhan Singh, Kishore, Harivasu and Jeeva.

His modus operandi was to contact women through matrimonial websites and promise to marry them. Later, he used to take money and after a few days, demand more. When the victims denied the money, he would threaten to call off the marriage and murder them.
