Trishul, Saqib set up clash for title

Trishul Chinnappa set up a final date with fellow-Bengalurian Syed Saqib Ahmed in the Tata Steel All India Amateur Golf Championships here at the Karnataka Golf Association on Saturday.

While the sixth seed Trishul, who was involved in a thrilling play-off win over Harimohan Singh in the quarters on Friday, beat fellow Bengalorean Rahul Ravi 4&2, Syed saw off the challenge of UP’s Pukhraj Gill 1 up.

The ninth seed Syed, who was one stroke down with two holes to play in his semifinal, showed a lot of courage to fight back.

With the match in the balance, Syed sank a thirty-footer for birdie to tie the score. With the presure now on Pukhraj, his tee shot on the final hole missed the fairway which handed the advantage to Syed and he didn’t need a second invitation.

“I’m so relieved to get through to my first all India final after what Pukhraj produced on the back nine,” Syed said after the encounter. “I enjoyed the birdie on the 17th and cannot wait for tomorrow (Sunday).”

In the other semifinal, the quick-starting Chinnappa went two up after the first two holes before Rahul halved the deficit on the fourth. He tied the match with a birdie a couple of holes later but Chinnappa replied in kind on the 12th to go one up.

With the pressure firmly on Rahul, he managed only a bogey on the par-3 15 and he couldn’t recover from that costly lapse.

“Rahul and I have played together since we were eleven so it felt like old times competing against him,” Chinnappa said after his semifinals. “I could have putted better today and I’m looking forward to another good match tomorrow against Saqib.”

Results (all semifinals, prefix denotes seedings): 9-Syed Saqib Ahmed bt 20-Pukhraj Singh Gill 1 UP; 6-Trishul Chinnappa beat 31-Rahul Ravi 4&2.
