19,000 Civil Defence volunteers to assist govt

The city has 18,854 volunteers of Civil Defence who assist over 412 departments. On Saturday, the Directorate of Civil Defence celebrated its 68th Raising Day by calling on its staff, volunteers and citizens to come forward and play a larger role in calamities.

A team of four Civil Defence personnel led by Incident Control Officer Hari Om Shukla displayed and demonstrated skills in rescue, firefighting, first aid, self-defence and disaster management.

Appreciating the programme and the vital role of Civil Defence, Principal Secretary (Revenue) S N Sahay emphasised on the role that citizens can play and said there is a brighter future for Civil Defence in the times to come.

“During such troubled times when the shadow of terrorism is looming large on society, we the citizen should brace ourselves to face the extremes, to avert risk and combat peril,” he said.

He also said the Civil Defence has always complemented and worked in tandem with the government organisations not only during calamities, but also at the time of religious functions and maintenance of communal harmony. Sahay also awarded President’s Award – Meritorious Services Medal and Distinguished Service Medals to 20 Civil Defence volunteers.
