In pursuit of good tunes

Producer and composer Donn Bhat is delighted at the response he has been getting for his latest album ‘Passenger Revelator’. Brought up in Delhi and now settled in Mumbai, Donn has been on a musical journey for many years now and the album just sums up his experiences. “The pursuit of a good song is therapeutic. More than making good music, it’s the journey that’s more memorable,” he says.

In 2013, Donnput together a band that debuted at Ziro Festival and then went on to play gigs across the country and win a number of fans in the process. But on this album, Donn has worked without the band. However, he has done some interesting collaborations including one with a sarangi player and one with Baul singer Malabika. “The inspiration came when I went for a Baul music festival outside Shantiniketan called ‘Kenduli Mela’ around two to three years ago. There, I heard Malabika singing a beautiful track on Krishna. Inspired by that and the works of Omar Khayyam, I put together a track,” he recalls.

‘Passenger Revelator’ comes eight years after his acclaimed debut album ‘One Way Circle’ and fuses genres to create an album that’s a blend of live electronica, electro-rock, folk and ambient all at once. “I like writing songs that one can relate to. I don’t have one sound and I am not really a DJ. I like to have a set where I can give energy out by dabbling with electronic and acoustic music,” he informs. “Music is like writing. Just like you can edit a story and change it, you can make many versions of one song,” he notes.

The last year, Donn tour extensively with a live band, playing at nearly every major festival in the countryincluding Bacardi NH7 Weekender, Magnetic Fields, India Bike Week and the Galle Music Festival in Sri Lanka, as well as gigs in various cities. In the process, he garnered a solid fan base that has been eagerly anticipating the release of this record.

Says Donn, “Having played my music with a full band at festivals and gigs last year, I believe my sound is now gravitating towards the experimental electronic space where the music remains ‘live’ and performance-oriented, and moves the listener both physically and emotionally. The road is open, these are exciting times ahead.”
The album was released in Pune and Mumbai recently. Music-lovers in the City can purchase the album onwww.oklisten.com/donnbhat. It can also be streamed onhttps://soundcloud.com/donnbhat
