'Rapist' driver shows no remorse: Police

The Uber cab driver, accused of raping a 25-year-old finance analyst with a Gurgaon-based company, was frightened when he was nabbed but has not shown any remorse for his act so far, police said Tuesday.

Police officials questioning 32-year-old Shiv Kumar Yadav, who was arrested from Mathura Sunday, was a "serial offender" and was involved in three rapes, including two in Delhi, and one in Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh.

Police said Yadav was accused in three more criminal cases in Mainpuri.

Yadav accepted during interrogation that he made a "mistake", but has not shown any remorse for his act, an official told IANS.

"Yadav was frightened when he nabbed him in Mathura. He never thought we will be able to reach him in his hideout. But so far, he has not shown any remorse," the official said.

He said Yadav has "low opinion" about working women, especially those working late.

"Yadav is a serial offender. He was always on the prowl for women who were soft targets. He would target women who used to work late or would look 'open' about sexual encounters with strangers. Also, he thought a women wearing skimpy clothes was an easy prey," an official, who is also part of the team questioning the driver, told IANS.

About Friday night's incident, the official said: "As soon as the woman took the cab, Yadav made a plan to sexually assault her because she had a few drinks. He never thought the woman would report the case."

The official said if the victim had spoken to anyone in her family or to friends over phone, the driver would not have mustered courage to assault her.

Police said during questioning they were able to establish the number of cases the driver was involved in.

"We have been able to find out that he was involved in at least three rape cases and one molestation case. In some instances, the victims did not file police cases," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Brijender Singh told IANS.

"Yadav was involved in a molestation in 2003, in a case connected with the Arms Act in 2006, and rape and robbery in 2013 in Mainpuri. He was arrested and charge sheeted in all cases," a police officer told IANS.

Yadav was also an accused in at least two cases under the Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act.

"All the cases are still under trial and he is out on bail," the officer said. In a May 2011 rape case in which he was acquitted, Yadav told interrogators that the woman was a bar dancer and so he thought of sexually assaulting her.
