Tax evasion: notices served to four ZPs

The Commercial Tax Department of Mysuru division has served noticesto four Zilla Panchayats, regarding tax evasion by several gram panchayats in the region.

In the notice, the department has sought informationon the extent of funds allotted
to gram panchayats and theamount of tax liable by the same. Chief Executive Officersof Mysuru, Kodagu, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts have been served notices, said Commercial Tax Officer, Nagarajappa.

Stating that the extent of tax evasion was “yet to be ascertained”, he said that based on the details provided by Zilla Panchayat, notices will then be served to the respective gram panchayats, seeking payment of pending taxes. “The delay is
not seen in all gram panchayats, as some of them do practice Tax Deduction at Source (TDS). However, around half the grama panchayats in four districts have not paid taxes,” he said.

He added that the period of tax evasion varied among different gram panchayats. “Other bodies such as Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited, Mysore City Corporation and
Mysore Urban Development Authority, tend to pay the taxes on time, as most of the works are taken up under e-procurement, which ensures TDS,” he said.

CEO, P A Gopal said that directionshave been issued to all departments of Zilla Panchayat to ensure that VAT amount ispaid for all purchases made by them. Apart from this, details of purchases made have also been sought, so as to ensure
payment of tax to the government, he said.
