Cisco unveils products designed in India

Giving credence to the engineering prowess of Indians, networking giant Cisco on Tuesday unveiled three products conceptualised, architected and designed at its Bengaluru centre for sectors like telecom, banking, retail and data centres.

Cisco President Engineering and India Site Leader Amit Phadnis said innovation is a core part of the Cisco culture and annually $5.9 billion has bee invested by the company in research and development worldwide.

The products, developed to give momentum to the vision of digitising India, include  the ASR 920-O,  designed for cost-effective delivery of wireline and wireless services, ISR 800M for providing secure connectivity to retail stores, bank branches, manufacturing plants and small offices, and MDS 9250i, a  storage area networking switch for data centres.

According to Phadnis, Cisco India has filed 830 patents from India and 500 patents issued for innovations across all technologies.

“I would like to say that these are reverse innovation at Cisco India, where engineers are designing products to address requirements of emerging countries like India. Here they exactly end up developing products that are globally attractive and competitive,” he said.

On cost competitiveness of the products for markets like India, he said it is a concern for the company. “But here we are looking at the consumability and functionalities of products. If it can’t  help the consumption purpose of the world then we have to find alternative products,”he said.

Interacting with Deccan Herald, Cisco India and SAARC president Dinesh Malkani said the company is expecting more opportunity in the sphere of Digital India initiatives.

Digitisation programme in India will pave the way for trends like Big Data, Internet of Everything (IoE), mobility, video and cloud.
