Impressions in lead and ink

For Rakshata, a final-year student of Computer Applications at CMR Institute of Management Studies, art became an intricate part of her life at a very young age.

Her adventure with pencil and paper started when she was in sixth standard, when she used to look at different newspapers and magazines to sketch. This soon became one of her favourite hobbies.

Going a notch further, she got into sketching. Her technique is mainly a combination of abstract and imaginary elements. “I draw whatever I feel at that moment.

Sometimes, my inspiration for art comes from a few striking photographs that I see online. I take a basic rubric, tweak it and add my own effects to it,” she says.

Mostly, a pencil sketcher and working with black ink on paper, Rakshata takes about three hours to complete a sketch. “It all comes by practice. One of my favourites is a sketch where I had combined an eagle wing and an eye. It took longer than usual, about six hours.” Some of her other artworks include geometrical images, colourful paintings and sceneries.

Rakshata uses a normal HP pencil to work with. A self-taught artist, she says that though art classes may help fine tune techniques and sharpen skills, the best form of exploration and creativity comes only when she practises on her own.

She gifts her artworks to people on special occasions like weddings and birthdays. She has also participated in various sketching competitions during her school and college days and one day hopes to showcase her work in a gallery or an exhibition.

“This is a big dream for me as I have not done anything like this so far. I will continue to draw more and when I feel I am capable enough, I will try and exhibit my work.”
The artist does not let in too much of a subjective interpretation.

“A few people like the images that they can comprehend but I think abstract is new and in trend today.” Taking to coding and programming on the side, Rakshata finds time to draw only during her vacations and weekends.

She would love to take classes once she learns and gets better at her work. She however, doesn’t want to pursue art full time as she has other interests too.
