Consultancy owner held for cheating student of Rs 27 Lakh

A 35-year-old man running a so-called education consultancy in Malleswaram has been arrested on the charge of cheating a student of Rs 27 lakh by falsely promising her an MBBS seat in a City college.

Chaitanya, a resident of Marathahalli, was arrested days after the student, who hails from West Bengal, contacted the DCP (Central) on phone and narrated her ordeal. The DCP directed the Cubbon Park police to investigate the complaint and go after the suspect. Police tracked Chaitanya’s mobile phone and arrested him from his office called ‘Princeton’ in Malleswaram. Investigators said they also seized 400 grams of gold worth Rs 11.7 lakh and Rs 13.8 lakh in cash from him.

According to police, Chaitanya took the money from the student a few months ago by promising to get her an MBBS seat in a college in the City. But when the girl tried to contact him a week after that, he went incommunicado.

After exhausting all means to trace Chaitanya, the girl happened to see a notice two weeks that said anyone in need of help could contact the office of DCP (Central), Sandeep Patil. She called up the DCP and explained her case.

Patil said that the suspect had approached the girl after learning that she was looking for an MBBS seat. He managed to contact her by taking her mobile number and promised to get her a seat.

“He took lakhs of rupees from many students by promising them admission in reputed colleges. We are still investigating how many students he has cheated this way,” the officer said.

The public can call 080-22942344 or 080-22942591 to make compliants.
