Five robbers flee with Rs 1.15 crore

Tie and gag bizman, his son at gunpoint

Five robbers allegedly barged into a dry fruit broker’s office in Lahori Gate area on Tuesday evening and made away with Rs 1.15 crore in cash after tying the businessman and his son to chairs and gagging them.

Police said the robbers remain unidentified till Wednesday evening. “There were two CCTV cameras installed in the immediate neighbourhood. Both were found to be out of order,” police told Deccan Herald.

Bhagirath Mutha deals in large-scale supply of dry fruits and runs his business from a two-storey building in Tilak Bazar in Lahori Gate area.

Police told Deccan Herald that the victim has claimed that half-an-hour prior to the robbery he had received over Rs 1 crore as payment on supplying a consignment of dry fruits.

“He was set to keep some amount as commission and pass the remaining money to other dealers in the chain,” said the officer.

He was seated in the first floor office with his son while some employees were working downstairs on Tuesday evening. At about 7.30 pm, five men arrived at the office and said they wanted to meet Mutha.

They entered Mutha’s office and bolted the door from inside while the unsuspecting employees continued with their work.

Mutha and his son were allegedly tied to their chairs and gagged at gunpoint by the men, police said. They then left with the cash without drawing anyone’s attention.

On hearing nothing from their employers for sometime, Mutha’s employees entered his office to find him and his son bound to chairs. They were released and police informed about the robbery.

A case in the connection was registered at Lahori Gate police station. Police suspect the involvement of one or more employees of Mutha as the robbers appeared to know the time when a large payment would be made to the businessman.
