All Railway recruitments will be made online: Min

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday ordered that all recruitment in the department should be made online. Though it would be implemented in a phased manner, the exercise will be time-bound.

“In order to improve the system of recruitment to match with the best practices so as to maximise objectivity, reduce subjectivity and to enhance credibility, it may be desirable and appropriate to do the entire recruitment exercise including the recruitment examinations on-line” Prabhu said.

“This may be holistically examined for implementation in time-bound manner with adequate checks and balances,” says the order.

“Though efforts have been made to improve the recruitment process, it still fails to inculcate an un-faltered sense of confidence among the candidates, the public quite often, even among the officers associated with the process,” Prabhu said.

The move to make recruitment online follows a series of high-profile scams that dented the credibility of the process.

In 2008, major recruitment scams were unearthed in Bhopal Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and Allahabad RRB, both relating to the loco-pilots.  In 2009, the Ajmer RRB was found to have indulged in illegal practices in recruiting assistant station master, while in 2010 the chairman of Mumbai RRB had to be arrested for wrongdoings.

Recently, the Gorakhpur RRB was mired in a scam in recruitment for the Railway Protection Force (RPF), whereas an arrest for made in Gwalior regarding leak of test papers.

Each year, the railways recruit about 75,000 people in C and D categories.
