No matter how full one is, there’s always room for dessert, especially when it’s a delicious treat from ‘Corner House’. Starting off as a fast food joint in 1982, the place has evolved over the years and is considered as one of the best ice cream parlours in the City.

Narayan Rao, the man behind the frozen treats, recalls, “It was all a co-incidence. We started off as a place that served burgers and pizzas. When it came to ice creams, we served only vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. We then offered Goan cuisine for about a year in 1983. But we were way before the years.”

In 1984, they started serving Chinese food. “But I didn’t want people to be waiting for 45 minutes to one hour for their meals; it just wasn’t working out,” he adds.

“In 1989, we went back to being a fast food joint and served burgers and ice creams. We had some great choice of burgers — the massive ones were our speciality. But as the years went by, we realised that it was ice creams and sundaes that Bengalureans really wanted,” he recalls.

But ‘Corner House’ finally became an ice cream parlour thanks to the staff not turning up one day! “This was in 1996. I shut down the kitchen, gave away all the leftover food to my family and friends and overnight, ‘Corner House’ officially became an ice cream parlour,” he says, proudly.

Narayan believes that what they do best is put together great sundaes. In fact, to market his ice creams, he even recreated them using potatoes and rice and showcased them to the customers in a refrigerator with a glass door. They started off with ‘Hot Chocolate Fudge’ and ‘Butterscotch Sundae’ and today, serve some of the best desserts like ‘Death By Chocolate’ and ‘Hot Caramel Cake’.

He believes their sundaes are special because of the quantity and their signature sauce. He says, “We take great pride in the chocolate sauce that we make, and that to an extent is what makes us unique. We also believe in delivering what one sees in pictures — all our items are as big as they look. Our idea is to bring out products that were more than just a conversational piece.” He also recalls some of the “bad pieces” like ‘thandai ice cream’, a herbal flavoured one made with ‘chavanprash’  and a ‘pan masala’ ice cream.

The 33-year-old joint brings back many memories for the people of the City. As Narayan says, “Many come back here to just relive the past. I’ve personally witnessed at least 10 couples, who have dated, married and stayed married during the evolution of the parlour. It’s a great feeling to bring a smile on people’s face with our hard work.”

‘Corner House’ has 15

outlets in the City, including one in Mysuru. Narayan plans to open more branches soon.
