Dineshwar Sharma is IB chief

The NDA government on Saturday announced that Special Director Dineshwar Sharma has been elevated to head the Intelligence Bureau.

He will take over from incumbent Syed Asif Ibrahim on January 1 after the latter’s retirement.

Deccan Herald had published the report — “Dineshwar Sharma is new IB chief”— on December 5 which the official orders have confirmed now.

In its official communique, the Department of Personnel and Training stated that the 1979 batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre will remain IB director “for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Sharma will officiate as officer on special duty with immediate effect to acclimatise himself with the top spy job and take over as the intelligence bureau director after Ibrahim’s retirement. Ibrahim was the first Muslim IPS officer to head the IB.

The more-than-a-week’s delay in issuing official orders on Sharma’s appointment had led to rumours of Modi having second thoughts.
