Constables seek Rs 1 lakh bribe, inquiry ordered

A Delhi Police head constable and two other constables have been accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh.

The policemen are posted with Kalyanpuri police station in east Delhi. It is alleged that they were demanding bribe from slum dwellers in the area.

On Friday, one of the locals reported the matter with the Vigilance Branch of Delhi Police. The complainant also provided an audio recording which he claims to have recorded on Tuesday. “The head constable is yet to be identified, but the constables are Vijay and Bir Singh. We have initiated an inquiry,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) Sindhu Pillai.

The man claims he was repairing his jhuggi in Kalyanpuri when the three policemen came there at around 10.30 am on Tuesday. “Constable Vijay allegedly asked the complainant to pay Rs 1 lakh to them for allowing the repair of his jhuggi,” Pillai added.

The man had agreed to pay the money and sought time till evening. Later in the day, a policeman allegedly called him on his mobile phone to confirm the payment of the money. The man claims that he recorded the conversation. “The audio recording contains conversation demanding illegal gratification,” Pillai said.

With the audio recording, the man had contacted the helpline number of vigilance branch. On Friday, he was called to the vigilance branch police station at Barakhamba Road and his statement was recorded. A case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered with vigilance branch police station. Sources said a team of local police went to the area and received similar complaints from most of the slum dwellers.
