Poets from India, Pakistan come together

Literary Soiree

The third edition of the International Poetry Festival was held in Delhi with poets and shayars reciting their poems to a packed auditorium at the Indian International Centre.  Also called Mushaira, the event was organised by Jashn-e-Adab, a poetry and literary society.

The occasion saw a host of poets from various parts of India and Pakistan which was presided by Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha Dr Karan Singh.

The event was also marked by an award ceremony in which poets were awarded for their outstanding contribution to literature through poetry for both Hindi and Urdu.

The Shan-e-Hindi, the award for excellence in Hindi language was given to Dr Kunwar Bechain, a well-know poet in literary circles. He has many books to his credit and is one of the leading poets of geet and ghazal of our times.

The award for Urdu language ‘Shan-e-Urdu’ was conferred upon Sheen Kaaf Nizaam, a known Urdu poet and critique par excellence. Speaking to Metrolife, Nizaam said, “Urdu is the manifestation of the union of various languages of India.  Languages themselves don’t belong to a particular religion and this provides us with the opportunity to use them to bring people together.”

He further added, “Such colourful nights and beautiful symposiums are our only chance to save a culture which has for long signified civility.”

The organisers of the event were also of the same view and said the society is “solely dedicated to celebrating poetry by organising poetry fests across the country”.
The award function was followed by a mushaira and kavi sammelan. Poets from across India and Pakistan recited their poetry and the audience was heard applauding the poets as the auditorium reverberated with wah wahs.

Speaking on the occasion, several poets emphasised on the need for such events. They said that mushairas or poetic symposiums have always formed an important part of the Indian and Pakistani societies. The event lasted well over four hours and was a treat for poetry and literature lovers.
