Vehicles banned on Agumbe Ghat from Dec 24

Last Updated 15 December 2014, 20:06 IST

The movement of vehicles on the scenic Agumbe Ghat Road that connects Malnad and coastal Karnataka regions will be banned for three months from December 24 to facilitate repair works.

The State government has released Rs 10 crore for the road upgrading project. Two tenders have been called for widening and concretisation of the road.

The three-month ban on movement of vehicles is likely to affect the local residents, students in particular. Children from Agumbe, Guddekeri, Hosuru, Megaravalli and other villages travel to Thirthalli or Shivamogga for school and college. They have said that few buses ply between Thirthahalli and Agumbe and have sought the government to introduce KSRTC services on the route.

More than 50 mini buses and 100 cars ply on the Agumbe Ghat Road. The travellers bound for coastal areas will have to take a detour of around 60 km.
