Little Mariyam continues her battle against fate

Happiness continues to elude the parents and relatives of baby Mariyam, a victim of alleged medical negligence, even as she remains in a vegetative state.

The three-year-old girl was admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Care, on December 16, last year. She was supposed to undergo a minor operation for a fracture she had suffered on her left hand. She went into a coma after an alleged overdose of anaesthesia while undergoing the procedure.

Mudassir, Mariyam’s father, vividly remembers the turn of events. “She was taken into the operation theatre at 8.45 am and was handed by back to us at 3 pm, in a state of coma.”

The family has stood by Mariam in her battle against fate, even as her health keeps fluctuating. Financially too, the family is going through a rough patch.

Says Mudassir, “We had to sell our house and shift to Hosakote to foot her bills. We travel from Hosakote to Manipal Hospital every now and then. We could not afford to keep her in the hospital and hence, created an ICU-like environment in our house.

Flicker of hope
After all the travails, the family has just one development to console. All these days, Mariyam was being fed through nasal tube. Recently, the tube wore out and had to be replaced surgically. Her mother tried to feed her orally and Mariam responded.
She is on a liquid diet, Mudassir added. The family is elated and it has rekindled their hope.

Reshma, Mariyam’s aunt said that they were trying to get in touch with the ministers who are presently in Belagavi. Umesh Aradhya, chairperson, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, who was a part of the committee looking into the case, has said that they were awaiting court’s judgement before arriving at any decision.
