SpiceJet fails to convince wary passengers

Last Updated 17 December 2014, 19:04 IST

SpiceJet passengers are now a worried lot fearing last minute cancellation of their flights by the troubled airline.

Though SpiceJet assured them full refund in case of cancellation, they are not satisfied. The fliers fear they may end up losing the refund as the airline is in a bad financial condition.

In addition, the customers feel they will have to shell out more money as the ticket prices will be higher for last minute purchases.“I have booked a Delhi-Bangalore ticket for mid-January. Now I am not sure whether they will operate it. If they cancel it, then I might not get a ticket for the same day in another plane,” said a harried passenger.

A large number of people had booked tickets with SpiceJet after it initiated a series of discount sales all through the year. Riding on such sales, the airline had filled more than 80 per cent of its capacity for several months. “I booked a ticket for my son who is studying in Chennai to come to Delhi for Christmas vacation. Now I may end up losing money and will have to spend more than what I saved through discount to get him a ticket,” rued Anand Singh, a Delhi-based businessman.

SpiceJet, however, sought to allay customers fear, saying they follow the standard operating procedure as per the directives of the DGCA.

“We either re-accommodate the customer on one of our flights or we refund 100 per cent of the airfare. As per the standard practice, SpiceJet provides refunds of all bookings for cancelled flights made directly with the airline within an average of 30 business days, with no deduction of any kind,” the airline said.
