The Tilak Nagar police have arrested a youth, a native of Nashik in Maharashtra, for cheating an MBBS aspirant of Rs 22 lakh.

The suspect has been identified as Gaurav Pagre, who claimed to be a medical student. He was arrested based on the information provided by Santosh Rai, the kingpin of the racket, on December 1, the police said.

Pagre told the police that he was working as a broker between Rai and medical aspirants.

Rai was arrested based on a complaint lodged by Arun Mittal, a native of Ahmedabad, in September. Rai contacted Mittal online and promised to get his daughter a medical seat. They struck a deal and Mittal made an initial payment of Rs 22 lakh. The entire mediation work was done by Pagre who has knowledge about medical courses, the police said.

Pagre used to visit medical colleges and talk to students, gleaning information about medical aspirants in their family and friends’ circle, the police said.

Rai, currently in the custody of the Sampigehalli police, has several cheating cases against him at various police stations.

The racket appears to be huge and more arrests will be made soon, the police added.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police recently arrested three men in connection with the tampering of RGUHS postgraduate answer sheets. The arrested include a Group ‘D’ employee of RGUHS, a clerk at Mysore Medical College and a retired employee, said the police.

A senior police officer said, “Their names cannot be revealed as they are still being questioned. We have also obtained clues about some senior officers involved in the racket and they will also be arrested soon.”

‘Hawala money’ seized
The Halasuru Gate police raided a marketing agency in Nagrathpet on Wednesday, arrested one person and seized Rs 14.5 lakh of suspected hawala money.
The arrested has been identified as Kanthilal, 40.

He was allegedly carrying out hawala operations in the guise of running a marketing agency.
