Poetry in flowers and metal

Timeless Collection

Poetry in flowers and metal

Designers Jason Cherian and Anshu have taken their creative energy to another level with their new collection.

Called ‘Flowers and Metal’, it has beautifully incorporated things available from nature to give life to some out-of-the-box ideas to enrich their label ‘smallshop’.

“Nature is an age-old inspiration whereas metal tools like pins, hooks, staples, paperclips and nibs facilitate conversion of an idea into a tangible form like clothing,” explains Anshu.

About how they got started on the collection, Jason explains, “It really started with walks in our vicinity which is thankfully still blessed with an amazing number of trees. The process involved observing the ground... careful collection and composition of fallen leaves, seeds and flowers,” says Jason. The same were used for resist printing on fabric with rollers in the discharge print technique.

“Each piece is unique and intrinsically unrepeatable,” stresses Jason. The collection is a juxtaposition of flowers and metal, so along with nature forms, they scanned metal tools like pins, hooks, staples, paperclips and nibs for their compositions.

“We also used the metal tools to create encrusted embroideries... these tiny tools seemed to take on a life of their own and easily crossed boundaries between functional objects to decorative craft,” explains Anshu.

Jason is particularly inspired by Karl Blossfeldt’s photography of flora and fauna. “Our young intern, Mithila Mohan, brought the pre-photography blue print technique into our studio. We soon had our in-house darkroom and of course sunlight needs no setting up... the scanned compositions of flowers and metal were printed on modal fabric and made into cushion covers,” explains Anshu.

Jason and Anshu prefer to look at fashion from a different perspective. They think fashion is really an exploration of how one wishes and chooses to dress. “We find it enjoyable to spend our time creating clothes with a sense of connect with what’s around us,” say Anshu and Jason. They believe in creating garments which involve special processes and are in some sense unique and timeless. “We are always delighted to spot someone wearing an outfit which was made a decade back and still looks special and lovely,” says
